Suratsuga Tongchangya, also known as Zedera Tongchangya, was born in 1924 in the village of Chottolukkisury. As the sixth child among seven siblings, Suratsuga was part of a large family, born to Shri Nandhoha Tongchangya and Smt. Badra Puri Tongchangya. His siblings were Laba Muni, Lababi, Gul Sugi, Awngo Puri, Suratsugi, and Uebori Tongchangya, reflecting the strong familial bonds and rich cultural heritage of the Tongchangya community.
Suratsuga came from a lineage deeply rooted in leadership and service. His grandfather, Shri Devicharan Tongchangya, set a precedent by becoming the first chief of the Tongchangya community in the Lusai Hills (present-day Mizoram) under British rule in 1933. This legacy of leadership would continue with Suratsuga, who dedicated his life to the welfare of his community. Throughout his life, Suratsuga was married to three wives—Smt. Srimoti Tongchangya, Smt. Panyabi Tongchangya, and Smt. Thoksi Puri Tongchangya. Together, they had 16 children, although not all survived into adulthood. Their children were Fulotso, Ranga Moy, Indu Kumar, Tongobi (deceased), Indisagar, Kansagar (deceased), Golujok (deceased), Utpal (deceased), Nangnai (deceased), Nagorong (Monglo Devi), Chickyo Muni, Thongia Muni (deceased), Nimisya, Issimya (deceased), Arpel, and Bitdhan (deceased) Tongchangya.
Suratsuga’s leadership extended beyond his family and into the broader community. He held the position of Village Council President (VCP) in Damdep-I (New Jognasury-I) within the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) in Mizoram for many years. His leadership was transformative; before his tenure, the area was troubled by theft and dacoity. Under his guidance, these lawless elements were driven away, and peace was established. Suratsuga was known for his bravery, sense of justice, and unwavering commitment to his people’s welfare. He was not only a leader who upheld law and order but also a promoter of education and Buddhism, tirelessly working to uplift his community.
Suratsuga’s involvement in regional politics further demonstrated his commitment to his community. He contested in the Member of District Council (MDC) elections from the Damdep MDC constituency under the banner of the Chakma Jatiyo Parishad (CJP) party. His collaboration with other prominent leaders, such as Dg. Nilobaran Chakma MCS and Dg. Nil Muni Chakma, the former Chief Executive Member of CADC, showcased his dedication to the political and social advancement of his people.
As we commemorate the birth centenary of Late Suratsuga Tongchangya, we remember and celebrate a life marked by courage, justice, and unwavering dedication to the welfare of the Tongchangya community. His legacy of leadership, commitment to justice, and contributions to education and Buddhism continue to inspire and guide us. Suratsuga Tongchangya’s life and work remain a beacon of hope and a source of strength for his community, reminding us of the enduring impact one individual’s commitment to the greater good can have on society.
